White House Reveals Federal Employee Job Cuts as Shutdown Approaches Three-Week Mark

Administration officials disclosed the initiation of government employee terminations on the end of the week, following through on earlier warnings in response to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to extend into its third consecutive week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

The director of the White House budget office posted on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” referring to the official process for terminating staff.

While the official did not specify which departments were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that notices had been issued within that department. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson indicated that layoffs would take place at the CISA. Also, a union representing federal workers confirmed that members at the Education Department would be affected by the reduction in force.

Union Response and Legal Challenges

Union leaders warned that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on services used by the public and vowed to contest the moves in court.

“It is disgraceful that the administration has exploited the funding lapse as an excuse to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who provide essential functions to the public nationwide,” said Everett Kelley, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.

The largest labor federation in the US responded to the announcement, saying, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Funding Battle

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to support a Republican-backed bill to reopen the government unless it includes provisions related to health policy. Following repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, indicating the standoff is unlikely to be resolved soon.

At a media briefing, the Republican House speaker, Mike Johnson, criticized Senate Democrats for rejecting the GOP bill, which passed in the lower chamber on a largely partisan basis.

Federal workers’ final pay that 700,000 federal workers will see until Washington Democrats decide to do their job and reopen the government,” Johnson said. Beginning shortly, military personnel, who often live on tight budgets, are going to miss a full paycheck.”

Judicial and Practical Limits

Previously, labor groups filed for a court injunction to prevent the administration from carrying out any layoffs during the shutdown. Additionally, a court official ordered the government to provide specifics on termination strategies, impacted departments, and if any government staff had been brought back to execute layoffs.

A report argued that a funding lapse limits the authority of the administration to conduct terminations, referencing official advice that acknowledged any permanent layoffs need to have been initiated before the funding expired.

Consequences for Employees

The layoffs took place on the same day that federal workers got only a partial paycheck for the end of September but excluding the beginning of the current month, since appropriations lapsed at the start of the period.

Max Stier, the president of the advocacy group, criticized the gridlock’s effect on federal employees.

“It is wrong to make government staff suffer because our elected officials in the legislature and the administration have failed to keep our government open and operational,” the advocate stated. “Our air traffic controllers, veterans’ healthcare providers, smoke jumpers and food inspectors are not at fault for this government shutdown.”

The irony is that lawmakers and top administration officials are still receiving salaries during the shutdown.
