A recent study reveals that patients who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.
Published data in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users using these medications must be informed of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a reversion to starting weight within about 18 months.
Weighing Treatments
The research, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally see a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Experts believe the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the amplified regain.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this medication results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Issue?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
Individuals who have come off the jabs explain a intense return of hunger.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and I was suddenly starving," described a patient.
This challenge is worsened if users have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Figures suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among females than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss hinges on combined lifestyle support.
